Sandra + Joe’s Iceland church ceremony!

This ceremony is the main reason Joe and Sandra booked me for this Iceland trip. They took advantage of my bucket list travel deal and added on the Iceland waterfall couple session I shared last week. Originally their couple session was supposed to be on the same day as the ceremony, but we switched things around so they could spend the most time possible with family.

Keflavíkurkirkja, or Keflavik Church, has been a part of Sandra’s family life for a very long time. Since her family is from Keflavik and her grandparents’ home is just around the corner from the church, Sandra grew up visiting Iceland and walking by the historic building. It’s her family church. In this church, Sandra’s parents got married, and Sandra was baptized and confirmed. This is also where the family celebrated her grandparents’ lives.

Early on, Joe and Sandra actually talked about an Iceland wedding. Sandra has always loved the way the church looks, and it holds a lot of meaning for her. But they really wanted all their friends to be able to attend, so they ultimately decided on a Hood River spring wedding. Still, it was important to Sandra and Joe that they find a way to celebrate their marriage at her family church. So, they planned this Iceland church ceremony afterward.

Even though the ceremony day was windy and cold, it was still so much fun! I loved capturing all the classic Scandinavian features of the old church. Its bright white walls perfectly contrast the wood tones of the pews and pulpit. While I mainly worked in digital, I also shot a roll of film. Overall, the final edits are full of emotion and nostalgia, really capturing this moment in Sandra and Joe’s love story.
