Fall Maternity Session

Lauren + Justin’s fall maternity session!

Lauren was pregnant with baby girl Esmae for this autumn photo session. You can tell from the photos that these two were just so excited to meet their little love. Lauren and Justin wanted to fully embrace the season for their fall maternity session. So, we were looking to shoot somewhere outdoors with lots of color. Even though Washington state is always gorgeous in the fall, with colorful trees all over, the mostly rainy autumn weather can make it tricky to find good portrait photography locations.

In the end, we settled on Wright Park for Lauren and Justin’s fall photoshoot. I love shooting at this park in the fall. The leaves on all the trees turn these beautiful shades of ocher and burnt umber, all those rich autumn colors. And, Wright Park has a lot of different options for shooting locations. One of my favorite spots is in front of the beautiful, all glass conservatory. Another great spot to shoot is on the little bridge that spans the park’s pond.

Lauren and Justin went with neutral, light-colored outfits for the session. Neutrals, especially light neutrals, are always a great choice when your photo location is really colorful. Keeping your clothing color palette simple can help you stand out in your environment instead of competing with it.

This maternity session, like all maternity sessions, was all about the props! In addition to mama’s baby-belly, I always tell people to bring baby things, like onesies, blankets, or ultrasound photos to their maternity sessions. Some of the coolest maternity photos are the ones including an ultrasound picture.

So, for their props, Lauren and Justin brought Esmae’s most recent ultrasound picture, a set of newborn jammies, an adorable pair of tiny knit booties, and a couple of sweet onesies. While Lauren and Justin changed into their second outfits, I got a chance to grab some details photos with their props and some bright fall leaves. It was really special getting some photos with the “rainbow babe” onesie in there.

Miraculously, we managed to do the entire shoot without getting rained on! And that’s pretty unheard of for a fall maternity session in Washington. We counted our blessings as we wrapped up this rain-free shoot. Then, not too long after the session, little miss Esmae made her grand entrance on January 6th.
