Few things feel as timeless as an ocean breeze, bare feet in the sand, and the kind of laughter that bubbles out when someone you love wraps you up in their arms. That’s the exact energy Bella and Ezra brought to their Southern California engagement photography session in Laguna Beach. All in all, the results were romantic, relaxed, and completely true to them.
Instant Connection and a Truly Organic Engagement Session
From the start, these two were a dream to photograph. They drove in from Las Vegas for their beach engagement session, while I flew down from Seattle. We packed this shoot into a whirlwind travel week filled with beautiful couples, but theirs was the perfect addition to my schedule. Though we hadn’t met before, their warmth made it feel like we were old friends. It also helped that they both grew up as pastors’ kids. That shared faith background made this session feel extra meaningful.
A Laguna Beach Session Filled with Soft Light and Intentional Style
We met at one of my favorite coves near Montage Laguna Beach. Although this location is often a bit busier due to its proximity to the resort, it’s a great spot during high tide. Many nearby beaches lose all their sand when the waves roll in. But this one always has a little stretch to work with, making it a consistent and reliable engagement photo location.
The setting was sun-drenched and soft. Film tones looked so good against the light sand and textured rock formations. The water also picked up the pastel hues in the sky perfectly. From our first few frames, I knew this was going to be a good one.
Outfit One: Modern Bridal Black and White
Bella and Ezra started the session in a formal look that still felt relaxed. Her white, off-the-shoulder gown from Reformation Bridal was effortlessly elegant. Meanwhile, Ezra’s all-black suit look gave just the right amount of contrast. We shot a mix of digital and film for this portion, making sure to capture that clean, classic feel before transitioning into their second look.
We walked barefoot across the wet sand, made the most of golden hour, and let them fall into their natural rhythm—playful, joyful, and completely connected. Their chemistry was effortless. And those journalistic images of them laughing, running, and holding each other close captured their energy so well.
A Perfect Second Look for a Southern California Engagement Photography Shoot
As the light shifted lower in the sky, Bella changed into the most perfect flowy pink two-piece set (also from Reformation). Ezra also swapped his black outfit for a casual white linen button-down and loose tan pants. The light hit just right, and as soon as I saw those colors on film, I knew we made the right call.
Reformation pieces are some of my favorites for engagement photos. They move well, reflect light beautifully, and bring a fun, editorial edge to a couple session. If you’re stuck on what to wear, I always recommend browsing their site for inspiration. Especially if you’re drawn to organic textures and romantic images.
Playful Movement and Nostalgic Film
We shot the rest of the engagement session on film. Everything about this portion felt like a movie: the soft pink outfit, the crashing waves, the way they danced and kissed and held each other against the backdrop of the ocean. It felt effortless but elevated. Completely editorial, but still real.
Film brings out tones you just can’t replicate with digital. Bella’s pink outfit against the golden sand, the foam of the waves glinting in the light, the way their skin glowed. Everything showed up in such a soft, dreamy way. I love mixing digital and film during couple sessions, but this final bunch of photos reminded me why film always holds my heart.
Why Laguna Beach Is One of My Go-To Southern California Engagement Photography Locations
Laguna Beach is one of the best places in Orange County for natural, coastal engagement photography. Between the cliffs, the ocean views, and the variety of coves, it’s a location that never gets old. Even better, it reflects the full range of your story—from fun and flirty to deeply emotional. Some of the nearby rock formations are perfect for framing your shots, especially when the golden hour light hits just right.
If you’re planning a coastal session here, I recommend weekday evenings (for fewer crowds). As for time of day, you’ll want to plan your session for either early golden hour or right at sunrise to get the best light. Also, keep an eye on tide charts, since some coves disappear completely at high tide.
Film, Faith, and a Shared Sense of Joy
This session reminded me of why I love what I do. Bella and Ezra brought their full selves to this session—unapologetically joyful, deeply connected, and so clearly ready for their next chapter together. That same authenticity is what I strive to bring to every shoot.
If you’re a couple looking for Southern California engagement photography that blends editorial detail with meaningful storytelling, I’d love to connect. I offer a mix of film and digital photography (or all-film if you prefer!) and specialize in capturing natural connection in coastal, romantic settings.
