Madison and Shayne’s rainy Western Washington engagement photography session in North Bend, WA!
When Madison and Shayne reached out about booking their Western Washington engagement session, they had no idea how perfectly their personalities would align with the weather. We met up in North Bend on a misty afternoon. While the clouds might have hidden Mount Si from view, nothing could dim the warmth these two brought to the session. From start to finish, it was a fun, laid-back shoot that captured their love, laughter, and joy as they prepared for not only their upcoming wedding but also a new addition to their family.
Early on in the planning process, Madison found out she was pregnant. So, this session doubled as an engagement shoot and a pregnancy announcement, which made it all the more special. We snapped a few sweet photos of Madison and Shayne holding their ultrasound images. It was such an honor to document this new chapter for them! Since then, they’ve booked me for their wedding day, and we’re also planning a maternity session soon. I love being able to capture multiple milestones for my couples—it makes the experience even more meaningful.
Rather than splitting between digital and film, Madison and Shayne opted for an all-film engagement session. Honestly, it was the perfect choice. There’s something about the softness of film grain paired with moody weather that brings so much depth to a gallery. Although we had hoped for better conditions, the misty rain actually added to the vibe. They didn’t stress about the forecast; instead, they danced in the rain, embraced the chill, and laughed their way through every frame.
By the time we arrived in the open field near Mount Si, the mist had really set in. But instead of letting it dampen the mood, Madison and Shayne leaned into it. They ran through the tall grass, twirled and dipped, and stayed close, radiating warmth through the grey. Shayne wore a light grey button-down over a white tee with dark pants, while Madison’s white slip dress and soft grey cardigan perfectly matched the tones of the day. Her dark brown cowboy boots were also the perfect choice — both practical and cute for the weather. Their smiles and energy brought the best energy to one of my favorite spots to shoot in Washington State.
Some of my favorite images from this shoot weren’t posed or planned. They were the quiet, candid ones — the in-between moments that speak volumes. Film photography has a beautiful way of bringing those authentic moments to life. Madison and Shayne laughed, kissed, and soaked in every second of their session. Even with the mountain hidden behind the mist, the stunning views and peaceful quiet of North Bend created a perfect, peaceful atmosphere.
Sessions like this are why I love doing Western Washington engagement photography. The weather may be unpredictable, but there is so much beauty in that. It forces us to slow down, embrace the moment, and be present with whatever the day gives us. Whether you’re hiking to a mountaintop or dancing in a field of wet grass, the photos that come from leaning into imperfection often turn out to be the most meaningful.
If you’re dreaming of your own engagement photos in the Pacific Northwest, I highly recommend keeping an open mind — and a cozy jacket on hand. Even misty days can create magic, especially when you choose a location with natural beauty like North Bend. As an engagement and wedding photographer, I love working with couples who are excited to make the most of whatever comes their way. No matter what the weather brings, I’ll be there to document the real, joy-filled moments that reflect your story.
