Maleka + Ben’s Whidbey Island proposal and couple session!
Set against the stunning backdrop of Puget Sound, their engagement shoot captured this couple’s love, desire for adventure, and appreciation of natural beauty. From the carefully planned picnic setup to the golden light, this Whidbey Island proposal was a really fun experience.
When Ben first reached out to me, he had a vision for a romantic proposal in a beautiful location. We worked together to plan the proposal. So, by the time the proposal day rolled around, we had everything set for a perfect Whidbey Island engagement shoot.
Ben knew he wanted a coastal proposal with breathtaking views, and Whidbey Island quickly became the ideal spot. I suggested Ebey’s Landing—one of my favorite spots on the island—because of its natural beauty. The location offers a unique mix of open fields, tall beach grass, and a driftwood beach along Puget Sound. Altogether, it makes a picturesque place for an engagement shoot.
To make the day even more special, Ben coordinated a picnic setup with the help of one of Maleka’s friends. All in all, it was the perfect backdrop for this Whidbey Island proposal. The picnic blanket, flowers, and snacks added a personal touch that made the moment feel particularly intimate and meaningful.
One of the things I love about photographing proposals is helping clients plan the logistics. Since I’m familiar with Whidbey Island from my own visits, I was able to suggest a location I knew would enable me to capture a stunning gallery. Ben’s attention to detail and thoughtfulness made this engagement shoot truly unforgettable.
When Ben first inquired with me, he shared some of their favorite things—and, of course, their dog Archie was at the top of the list! Archie joined them for the proposal, adding an extra layer of sweetness to the session. I loved capturing moments of the three of them together, walking through the beach grass and along the beach during this Whidbey Island proposal shoot.
Ben also shared that he and Makela have bonded over their shared love of fashion, trying new foods, and traveling. Their style and love of adventure were evident in their engagement photos. Maleka wore a flowy white dress with cute puff sleeves, while Ben opted for a white button-down shirt and light khaki pants. All in all, their outfits perfectly complemented the natural, organic backdrop of Ebey’s Landing.
Proposals always come with a bit of suspense—you never know exactly how things will play out! On the day of the shoot, traffic heading north to Whidbey Island was terrible. And, as always with proposals, the timing needed to be just right. To ensure everything went smoothly, I asked Ben to share his location with me that day. That way, I could track his progress without needing to text him, avoiding any chance of Maleka seeing my name pop up on his phone.
Fortunately, the two of them arrived on time, and I was able to position myself at Ebey’s Landing without being seen. Since this spot is an open field with few places to hide, I kept my distance until I saw them coming up the stairs. Watching them walk toward the setup, with the golden light behind them, was a memorable moment.
Once Ben proposed, and Maleka said yes, we spent some time taking engagement photos in different areas around Ebey’s Landing. We captured romantic shots in the tall beach grass, down on the beach, and by the water. I shot half of the session in digital and half on film, creating a gallery that feels timeless, authentic, and heartfelt.
Looking back on Ben and Maleka’s Whidbey Island proposal, I’m reminded of why I love photographing couples in love. There’s something magical about capturing these once-in-a-lifetime moments in a natural setting that feels both intimate and breathtaking.
