Tulum Mexico Wedding Photography Retreat

November 14, 2022

My first trip to Mexico + a wonderful Tulum Mexico wedding photography retreat!

Believe it or not, this was my first time visiting Mexico. I’ve been out of the country many times, but all international travel has a different feel. So, when this retreat came up, I knew it would be a great chance to gain experience traveling and shooting in Mexico. Now, I can’t wait to book future photoshoots south of the border!

Initially, I decided to invest in this Tulum Mexico wedding photography retreat because it included a good mix of shooting and relaxing. Plus, I know the styled shoot planner, Sydney, owner of Wildly in Love, a destination wedding planning company. I actually did her engagement photos in Grand Canyon National Park! So, I knew the styled sessions would have a gorgeous aesthetic.

I planned to meet up with another Seattle wedding photographer at the airport so we could fly to Cancun together. We’d never met in person before we arrived at SeaTac, but we hit it off instantly! When we landed in Mexico, I was surprised by how chaotic it felt. But we managed to find the DC photographer we were meeting up with, and then we all drove to Tulum together. It was a long, hard travel day, but we made it!

On day one, we shot both a bridal session and a couple session. We started at the Airbnb we were all staying in, then drove out to the cenotes for more photos with both couples. We also had some fun taking headshots of each other.

The next day, we did sunrise beach photos with a bridal and a casual couple. The bridal session included a beautiful, beachy table setup. The neutral color scheme was so perfect for the ocean-front location! After the shoots, a bunch of the girls decided to go to a nearby resort. So, we spent the rest of the day enjoying all-inclusive amenities and soaking up the sun by the pool.

We did a boat tour and snorkeled on our last day. A highlight for me was fishing from the boat as we drove out and catching some little tuna! We had to throw them back, but it was still a fun experience.  Once we were out on the water, everyone jumped in. Since I’m not a huge fan of the ocean, I swam a little, then hung out on the boat.

Even though I’ve been out in on a boat fishing in the Puget Sound a bunch of times and never gotten seasick, on this trip, I got seasick out of nowhere. Luckily, I didn’t have to fly home until later that day. So, I slept it off and felt much better! I was able to enjoy the rest of the day exploring Tulum and checking out all the shops.

I love how the digital edits and film came out from these shoots! Photographers, check out my natural, creamy Brooke Nalani Presets to get soft edits like these. Overall, this Tulum Mexico wedding photography retreat was such a fun trip. If you’re the adventurous type, click here to check my travel bucket list for your dream photoshoot destination. I can’t wait to shoot in Mexico again!
